LAS VEGAS -- Two fighters calling Spokane home earned a pair of wins in UFC 173 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Saturday, May 23. Both products of local high school wrestling, Michael Chiesa and Sam Sicilia will come back to the Lilac City with another victory notched in their belts.

Sicilia (13-4-0) faced off with Ultimate Fighting Championship newcomer Aaron Phillips (8-1-0) and handed the University of Louisiana Lafayette graduate his first professional loss. The decision went to the cards and Sicilia won unanimously, 29-28, 29-28, 30-27.

Sicilia's UFC experience proved handy as he controlled the fight for 10:24 compared to Phillips' 1:07. Sicilia also got the rookie to the ground often, going 4-of-7 and keeping control of Phillips on the octagon floor for over 9 minutes of the bout. Phillips continued his pattern of accurate striking, landing 81-percent (145-of-181) of his attempts, but Sicilia was more successful despite landing fewer punches earning a knockdown and a submission attempt during the fight.

Chiesa (11-1-0) faced a more experienced test in the form of 35-year old Brazilian Francisco Trinaldo (14-4). Despite the Maverick bringing Trinaldo to the ground and pounding his face to a swelling point early in the first round, Massaranduba--as he goes by--forced Chiesa to go the distance, with the cards reading a unanimous decision, 30-26, 30-26, 30-27.

With much of the fight taking place on the ground, Trinaldo failed to even record a second of position compared to Chiesa's 8:45 parade of control. Chiesa finished with 121 total strikes, many of which came while on the ground, while Trinaldo only managed to land 23 of his 44 attempts. The product of Rick Little's Sikjitsu Gym dealt with two low blows in separate rounds and only had to fend off one awkward submission attempt in the second round from Trinaldo to earn the win.

Little will join SWX Tonight on Wednesday, May 28, at 10:30 p.m. PDT and will surely talk about the recent success both of his fighters had on Saturday.

SWXRightNow.com -- Washington State head football coach Mike Leach has a word for his own sayings, Leach-isms. He's written a book about the leadership strategies of the great Native American warrior Geronimo. He once told the great fictional coach Eric Taylor on the famed TV show "Friday Night Lights" to,"swing his sword." Which is actually the title of his autobiography and a phrase he tells his players to do often. Now Leach can add the title "horrible commercial savior" to his repertoire....
