Poll Shows Missoulians Support Public Ownership of Water

Posted: Updated:
MISSOULA - A new poll shows 73 percent of Missoula voters support public ownership of the City's water supply.

The survey of 510 active voters was conducted by Missoula attorneys and the Harstad Strategic Research of Colorado, to measure voter opinion on the City’s acquisition of Mountain Water.

Wednesday, the Carlyle group informed the City, Mountain Water is for sale.

“A solid 73 percent of Missoula voters want the City to own our water system,” said Mayor John Engen. “Our pollster tells us that’s remarkable support for an initiative like this one.”

The survey also shows that almost all of those asked are satisfied with the quality of life in Missoula, while a strong majority is satisfied with city government and the city’s operation of the wastewater utility.

While voters were satisfied with Mountain Water’s service, they believe the City would be a better owner than the current owner, the Carlyle Group, a global investment fund, which announced on Wednesday that Mountain Water, along with two other Carlyle-
owned systems in California, is for sale.

The survey cost $35,000 and is part of the legal expense authorized by the City in its case against Mountain Water and Carlyle and will be added to acquisition costs.
