Couple Rides 2,800 Miles To Raise Money For Students

Posted: Updated:
A Bozeman couple is preparing to bike 2,800 miles across country.

Gerry and Pat Goede are getting ready to ride their bikes 2,800 miles from Texas to Canada and back to Bozeman.

"One of the things my wife and I love is bike riding. It allows us to enjoy the bike riding aspect of it while also helping out for a good cause," said Gerry Goede.

This is the second time the Goedes have ridden their bikes across the country. The first time was six years ago. The couple rode from Seattle to Maine.

The idea is to raise scholarship money for future students at Heritage Christian School where Gerry is a co-administrator and teacher. Heritage Christian's tuition runs about $6,000 per year.

"The last time we rode across country we raised almost $12,000. We put that into an endowment fund that in the last 4 or 5 years has given out more than $4,000 in scholarships," said Gerry.

"After 27,000 miles on this bike together, we pretty much know what each other is going to do. We communicate very well," said Pat Goede.

The past couple of years were tough for the Goedes. On top of Gerry working on his masters and teaching at Montana State University, Heritage Christian School suddenly suffered heavy damages by arson and closed right before the school year began.

So, this trip is not only for a good cause, but for the two to spend time together.

"We just get to talk and just be together," said Pat. "The second thing is meeting people along the way. We get to talk to a lot of people along the way about the biking and hopefully about the Lord."

Of course there will be some challenges along the way, but their good luck charm and mascot, Paddles will be there the whole time.

"The challenging part will be starting out in Texas," said Gerry. "The second thing were always concerned about is safety on the roads. We have a lot of people praying for us. Our last trip we had one or two times where trucks and cars almost hit us."

The couple plans on biking about 60 miles a day.

The Goedes will be tracking their entire trip along the way. To check out their blog or to donate to the trip, visit the Heritage Christian School website.
