2,900 Students to Graduate from University of Montana on Saturday

Posted: Updated:
MISSOULA - Graduation weekend has arrived in Missoula and tomorrow, about 2,900 students will graduate from the University of Montana.

Officials said UM will award 3,700 degrees to those graduates.

Kelsey Bailey has spent the past four years earning a wildlife biology degree.

"Now looking back on it, it's really funny, it's been a really hard program, but very rewarding," she said.

Bailey said her studies have prepared her to enter the work force, but she knows there's more to learn in her field.

"But, I think it definitely has to be experience, I don't think school can teach you everything you need to know out there in life," Bailey said.

Bailey said she's hoping to work as a conservation specialist at Fish, Wildlife and Parks.

"That's my plan, and you never know, it might change!"

"They have done remarkably well, and a number of them are going off to exciting jobs," said UM Provost Perry Brown.

Brown said some of the students graduating tomorrow include Truman and Udall Scholars and some who have been accepted to the Fullbright Scholar program.

"Student success has just become paramount over the last year," he said.

Brown said members of the class of 2014 have also helped the university foster innovative new programs in big data analytics and traumatic brain injuries over the last year. Brown said he's also proud to say some of those walking in tomorrow's ceremonies will be the first college graduates in their families.

"It's going to be a happy day, it'll be really fun," Brown added.

Bailey said her parents and grandparents just arrived in Missoula from her hometown of Colstrip, and is glad they'll be in the stands to see her receive her degree.

"Just really exciting, it's a time that I didn't think was exciting at all, I'm like, whatever, but it's a huge deal," Bailey said.

The main commencement ceremony takes place in Washington-Grizzly Stadium at 10 a.m.

A handful of UM students graduating tomorrow will also be commissioned into the U.S. Army.

Twelve seniors have completed the Army ROTC program while earning their bachelor's degrees.

In addition to their college courses, each student has also completed an advanced course in military science.

They were also required to complete a 28-day leadership development and assessment course at Fort Lewis, Washington, to decide if they're ready for the military.

"They're able to manage that course load on top of everything else that they've got going on in their lives, and we're really proud of this group of kids because they've done an outstanding job this year," said Major Thomas Luhrsen, of the UM Army ROTC.

The UM Army ROTC Spring Commissioning Ceremony takes place at Schreiber Gym.

Graduates will take their oath of office and will be sworn in as Second Lieutenants.

The event starts at 4 p.m.
