Fifth Graders Bring Historical Figures To Life

Posted: Updated:
KALISPELL - Famous figures like Cleopatra, Coco Chanel, and Marie Curie grace the halls of Peterson Elementary today.

It's the annual wax museum.

More than 50 fifth graders have worked for three weeks researching, writing, and rewriting biographies about historically important people. They even had to memorize their biographies and recite them in front of the class.

Wednesday, they set up posters and dressed up as their person.

Part of the Common Core standards is informational writing, so they got to spend more time than usual on this project, which really showed.

"They have surprised us in ways that-- every year we're like wow, but this year is probably one of the best," said Kari Peiffer, a fifth grade teacher at Peterson.

"I worked with reactivity so I invented X-rays. Also, I was the first woman to win a Nobel prize. Furthermore, I was the only woman to win a Nobel prize in two different fields: physics and chemistry," recited Shelbie Guckenberg, who studied and dressed up as Marie Curie.

Students picked from a list of people. If they wanted to study someone not on the list, they had to persuade their teacher in writing that the person they were interested in is worth researching.
