Tester Calls For Greater Transparency, Accountability In Military Spending

Senator Jon Tester makes a push for greater transparency and accountability in the Defense Department's budget.

Tester said the Defense Department is the only federal department that hasn't done a full audit of its spending. He spoke at a Senate hearing, calling the military's failure to open its books and account for its spending a disservice to taxpayers and military personnel. He said Pentagon spending is now almost 60% of the nation's overall discretionary spending.

"When we continue to hear of the wasteful contracts in Afghanistan or the failure of the department to develop and deploy an electronic health records system in tandem with the VA, the department's failure to meet audit readiness is frustrating," Tester said.

Tester's call for a defense department audit comes after the Secretary of Veterans Affairs ordered audits at all VA clinics in the wake of accusations a Phoenix, Arizona clinic left thousands of veterans awaiting care, some of whom died waiting.
