Monforton School Breaks Ground On New Classrooms

Posted: Updated:
BOZEMAN - Construction is underway at a growing Bozeman area school.

“We thought we were building for the future, but we still building to keep up,” said Darren Strauch, Monforton School Superintendent.

Monforton School broke ground Friday evening on its $2.9 million expansion to add more classrooms.

Voters approved the bond paying for the expansion in September. The last $3.5 million addition open in August and is already full.

Strauch said the school has seen 82 more students enroll since July 2012.

“As you can see with the growth and building around that number is going to get smaller anytime soon,” said Strauch.

The latest addition will include three new classrooms for third and fifth graders, a new kitchen and cafeteria that will also serve as a multi-purpose room.

The current kitchen and cafeteria is a converted classroom.

Eighth grader Garret Nielson said that’s a problem for students.

“Kids have to go eat lunch at times that aren't really lunch time,” said Nielson. “So there isn't really enough space to fit the 332 kids we have.”

Strauch said only the younger kids eat in the cafeteria, the rest of the students eat in their classrooms.

He also said he’s expecting to add to that group in the fall with a third second grade class in the fall.

This will be the first time a grade level at Monforton has more than two classes.

With the growing need for classrooms, some teachers won’t have classrooms until the expansion in open.

“We will be putting our music program on a cart, which will make things interesting,” said Strauch. “Our Spanish class is already on a cart. So those teachers are itinerant and just wander around the building.”

The cafeteria will be converted back to a classroom when the new one opens, giving the school four new classrooms when construction in complete.

That construction is expected to be finished by January when students return from winter break.
