Some drivers will park illegally in parking spots designated for drivers with disabilities. Crime Tracker Kalae Chock found out it's a reoccurring problem and says the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office is relying on volunteers to help them crack down on drivers stealing the spots from the people who really need them.

The Sheriff’s Office has about a dozen S.C.O.P.E. volunteers are commissioned to write tickets to drivers who park illegally in these spots. S.C.O.P.E. Volunteer Darrel Borak says it’s an issue that hits close to home. His wife has Multiple Sclerosis and they park in spots for people with disabilities. Borak says it’s frustrating when he sees someone who does not have a disability park in a spot his wife needs.

If you park in one of these spots, you’ll get a $450 dollar ticket. And, it’s not just the parking spot itself. You can’t park in the stripped area next to the spot either. It’s called the access and drivers need the extra space to get out of their vehicles. You’ll also get a ticket if you block the parking spot or the access.

Finally, remember if you are allowed to park in these spaces, S.C.O.P.E. volunteers remind you to hang your placards so they know you’re not parked illegally.
