Montana Dept. of Transportation Announces "Vision Zero" Campaign

Posted: Updated:
MISSOULA - The Montana Department of Transportation announces a new initiative to eliminate all deaths and injuries on Montana highways.

The initiative is called "Vision Zero" and it will include billboard and TV ads showing the graphic reality of car crashes.

MDT officials said Vision Zero focuses on educating the public, increased law enforcement presence, maintaining roadways and funding emergency response teams.

Kolter Beneitone, 22, was ejected through a car sunroof because he wasn't wearing a seatbelt in 2012 car accident.

It left him paralyzed, and he said he joined the campaign to share the importance of wearing a seatbelt.

Beneitone said, "It just feels good to be able to make it simple and it takes all of a few seconds… all of a few seconds to do something that will change your life forever."

During the last 10 years, more than 2,000 people have died in car crashes on Montana roadways.

About half of those accidents involved people not wearing seatbelts.

And 282 18 to 25-year-olds died in vehicle crashes involving an impaired driver.
