SPOKANE, Wash. - Tuesday morning, local law enforcement agencies honored four officers who were killed in the line of duty by adding their names to the law enforcement memorial at the Public Safety Building.

Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo served as the guest speaker while adding Deputy Sheriff James F. Chatfield, killed in 1921, to the memorial. Also on hand were Mayor Condon, Chief Straub, WSP Captain Jeff Otis, Spokane Valley Police Chief Rick VanLeuven and U.S. Border Patrol Spokane Sector Chief Gloria Chavez.

Chatfield was killed in July of 1921 during gunfire with two suspected bootleggers near the Canadian border.

Also added to the memorial was Wapato Police Department Officer Derek "Chip" Hansen. Hansen died this year in March from complications from injuries he suffered after being attacked by a suspect in July of 2011.

Washington State Patrol Trooper Sean Michael O'Connell, Jr. was also added. O'Connell was killed one year ago when he was hit by an on-coming truck while directing traffic.

And finally, Bellingham Police Department Patrolman Otto Brown was also added. Brown died in July of 1930 as a result of a motorcycle crash while on-duty.
