Officials Urge Caution In Backcountry During Spring

Posted: Updated:
BOZEMAN - Emergency officials are urging people to use caution when in the backcountry this time of year.

The Anaconda- Deer Lodge County Coroner said 46-year-old Ron Russell died when he was caught in an avalanche while skiing on Saturday outside Anaconda.

That same day, a hiker was stranded in the snow on the ridge of the Bridger Mountains near Bozeman.

Officials said weather conditions can change at a moment's notice this time of year, and you should be prepared for it.

“You have to be prepared to take everything with you, because you could be in shorts in one minute and a true blizzard the next,” said Lt. Jason Jarrett, with the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Department. “You could be walking on bare rock, or you could be trudging through snow up to your waist.”

Jarrett said people should know the country you're going into.

The Gallatin and Flathead Avalanche Centers have already stopped issuing advisories for the season, but the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center still has tips on what to look for on their website.
