McGrath Single Edges Cougs Past USC in the 10th

PULLMAN, Wash. – Patrick McGrath delivered a run-scoring single in the bottom of the 10th inning to provide Washington State a 4-3 victory over No. 24 USC in Pac-12 Conference baseball at Bailey-Brayton Field, Saturday.

McGrath’s hit came off USC (24-20, 12-11 Pac-12) reliever Kyle Davis (2-4) and scored Nick Tanielu. The winning rally started when Tanielu lined a single to center field. After Ben Roberts sacrificed Tanielu to second, P.J. Jones struck out and Ian Sagdal was intentionally walked.

Kellen Camus (5-0), the fourth Washington State (20-22, 10-10 Pac-12) hurler, recorded the final out in the top of the 10th inning and earned the win. It was the 12th-career victory for Camus in relief, one shy of the school record.

The Cougars broke on top 1-0 in the first inning when Trek Stemp walked with one out followed by singles from Yale Rosen and Tanielu.

The Trojans scored twice in the top of the fourth against Cougar starter Jason Monda to take a 2-1 lead. Monda held USC in check after that and finished with a career-high tying six strikeouts in eighth inning of work.

In the bottom of the fifth, Washington State scored twice to gain a 3-2 advantage. With one out, Trace Tam Sing was hit by a pitch. After Tam Sing moved to second on a ground out, Stemp tied the game with a single through the left side. Rosen followed with a double into the left-center field gap that scored Stemp.

The Cougars were two outs away from victory in the ninth, when Timmy Robinson doubled to tie the game off Washington State closer Ian Hamilton.

The series concludes, Sunday with first pitch scheduled for noon.
