Tech Receives $1.25 Million Grant For Research Project

Posted: Updated:

Montana Tech announced Wednesday the school is awarded a $1.25 million grant from the National Institute of Health Science Education Partnership.

The money will be going towards a research project known as "Bringing Research into the Classroom".

With the grant, Montana Tech will team up with the Clark Fork Watershed Education Program to work together with K-12 teachers and students.

The research project will focus on students exploring viruses that infect bacteria.

The goal is teach students how to work in laboratories.

“This helps Montana Tech with its mission of increasing science education and stem literacy,” said Rayelynn Connole, with the Clark Fork Watershed Education Program. “We'll be funneling students who will be engaging in stem careers."

"It's going to help us provide outreach experiences for the teachers, provide summer workshops for the teachers to come to Montana Tech, and work with a large number of students in the process," said Marisa Pedulla, a professor at Montana Tech.

Research organizers say they will immediately begin exploring potential schools to participate in the project.

They expect to reach out to thousands of students in Montana.
