Big Sky H.S. Offers Counseling to Grieving Students, Staff

Posted: Updated:
MISSOULA - Missoula County Public School officials said shooting victim Diren Dede, 17, was a junior at Big Sky High School.

School officials said they're focused on supporting Dede's family and helping Big Sky students and staff through their grief.

Missoula school officials said Diren Dede arrived in Missoula back in August.

Dede came to the states from Hamburg, Germany through a foreign exchange program.

"And he did participate in the soccer team as well as the track team at Big Sky High School," said Hatton Littman, of Missoula County Public Schools.

Littman said they contacted Dede's parents the night of the incident, and they're now on their way to the U.S.

"We worked in conjunction with the student's host family to make sure services were provided to the student and his family," Littman said.

Littman said Dede was a popular student at Big Sky.

"School staff definitely identify him as a great student who was well loved by his peers and the staff at the school," she said.

There were no classes for students Monday, but school guidance counselors and two Tamarack Grief Resource Center experts provided counseling sessions for Big Sky students and staff.

Littman added, "And then tomorrow, we'll actually have guidance counselors come from around the district come to the school to provide additional support in classes that Diren attended as well as to students who just need to take a break from their class and visit one of the special counseling rooms."

Members of Dede's soccer team in Germany say they were speechless when they learned about his death.

They said they're planning a charity game for Dede's family.
