SEATTLE – Washington State rallied past arch-rival Washington for a 6-4 victory in the opener of a three-game Pac-12 Conference baseball series, Friday.

The Cougars (18-20, 8-8 Pac-12) spotted the fifth-ranked and conference leading Huskies (27-10-1, 14-5) four runs, but scored three times in the third and seventh innings to post the win.

The Huskies got on the board first when Austin Rei hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the second against Cougar starter Joe Pistorese. Washington added another run in the inning for a 4-0 lead.

Washington State had an immediate response scoring three times in the top of the third to pull with 4-3. Collin Slaybaugh led off with a single and moved to third on a pair of wild pitches by Husky starter Jared Fisher. P.J. Jones and Yale Rosen walked to load the bases and Nick Tanielu’s sacrifice fly plated Slaybaugh. Ben Roberts followed with a two-run triple to cap the rally.

The Cougars tallied three times in the seventh against the Washington bullpen to complete the comeback. Trace Tam Sing led off the seventh with a walk and moved to third on a double by Slaybaugh. With one out, Rosen was intentionally walked to load the bases. A fielder’s choice off the bat of Tanielu brought up Tam Sing with the tying run. After pinch hitter Trek Stemp walked to load the bases, Ian Sagdal knocked in two runs with a single to put Washington State on top.

Kellen Camus (4-0), the second of five Cougar pitchers, recorded four outs for the victory. It was his 11th win in relief during his Washington State career, third in school history. Ian Hamilton worked the final 1 1/3 innings for his 11th save. The freshman struck out the side in the ninth.

Trevor Dunlap (2-2) gave up all three runs in the seventh and suffered the loss. The series continues, Saturday at 7:35 p.m.

Road sweeps are tough enough to come by in any situation, especially late in the season on the road against a divisional rival. However, the Pippins picked up their second road sweep of the season with a 4-1 win over the Walla Walla Sweets Thursday night at Borleske Stadium.
