MOSCOW, Idaho – Paul Petrino saw a lot to like Friday night during the University of Idaho’s spring football finale at the Kibbie Dome.

“The future looks bright,” said Petrino, after lauding the effort and improvement of the three areas – offensive line, defensive line and quarterback, that he says are key to winning championships. “If you want to win championships, that’s where it starts. We have a good chance to be good at those three spots.”

When the dust settled on the scrimmage the Gold, comprised primarily of first team players, won 61-14. The quarterbacks, though, shared time with both teams and came out with impressive numbers. Sophomore Chad Chalich completed 16 of 27 for 306 yards and redshirt freshman Matt Linehan was good on 30 of 46 for 373 yards. Each had two touchdowns.

They have a deep and talented corps of receivers as targets. Senior Dezmon Epps caught 11 for 121 yards with sophomores Deon Watson and Jacob Sannon collecting nine each – Watson’s for 160 yards and Sannon’s for 142. Josh McCain, the quarterback-turned-receiver, caught four for 80 as did sophomore running back/receiver Richard Montgomery.

Montgomery also had 83 yards rushing on four carries to back senior Jerrel Brown, who had 14 carries for 86 yards. Kris Olugbode, another senior, added another 80 yards on 10 carries.

“We’re so much faster,” Petrino said. “Our whole team works so much harder. You can hear the hitting. It’s exciting right now – the attitude and the effort.”
