SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -

Spokane Valley Fire Department was called to two working fires within ten minutes of each other just after 11am.

The first fire occurred at an apartment on the 200-block of Sullivan Road. It began as a woman was cooking in her first floor apartment.

The entire building was evacuated. No one was hurt. The woman’s apartment suffered severe fire damage, but it did not appear the fire spread to any adjacent apartments.

Just minutes later SVFD was called to another working fire – this one on the 10-thousand block of 17th Avenue. They began pulling engines from the Sullivan Rd fire, but also required help from Spokane FD. The fire started in a back bedroom of the 1-floor home. The homeowner was out when the fire began. Fire fighters tried to resuscitate her dog using an oxygen mask, but the dog died just as the homeowner returned to find crews on her property and in her home.

Obviously a very difficult day for the residents of these two Spokane Valley homes, but Captain Jeff Bordwell praised the work of his crew.

“It’s a stellar day for Spokane Valley fire,” Captain Bordwell said.

“For the homeowner maybe not so much… The guys stood up to the task of what they’re trained to do and did a great job.”
