Butte Police Train for Foot Pursuit

Posted: Updated:

Most of Butte's finest had a chance to simulate and experience what it's like to be in a foot pursuit as they took part in their annual obstacle course training.

There's hurdles, balance beams, stairs, and jumping.

It's called the Montana Law Enforcement Physical Abilities Test.

"It simulates a foot pursuit and then a struggle after it at the end," said Sergeant Russ Robertson.

Almost all the officers in Butte will go through this obstacle course.

The course trains them for a foot pursuit, and this machine signifies a physical altercation at the end.

"This is a very good indicator of what it feels like to be in a foot pursuit, the exertion and how much it takes to take someone down, and how to continue through the whole thing," said Officer C.D. Holter.

"Physical fitness is probably the most important thing that we do,” Robertson said. “We all know that if we can't help ourselves, then we're not going to be able to help anyone else."

The officers must get through the entire course in less than 6:30.

But swat team members have less time.

They must complete it in 4:30.

"SWAT Team has to be in better shape,” said Robertson. “There is more physical requirements for SWAT. They're put in situations where, obviously more dangerous situations, where they go through physical confrontations, breaking doors, and things like that."

The Butte-Silver Bow County police train on the course three times a year.

In total, all the officers finished under the regulated time.

If the officers pass the physical exam, they are awarded a day off at some point during the year.
