SPOKANE, Wash. -

It took a jury only a little more than two hours on Wednesday to find Daniel Arteaga guilty for the murder of Kim Schmidt. The prosecution said Arteaga was very jealous that his relationship was ending with Schmidt and she was moving on. They say that's part of the reason why he decided to kill her at the beginning of 2012. The defense disagreed saying that Arteaga was not there when she died and they think she may have even died of suicide. The defense also argued that Arteaga cooperated with detectives as much as possible. They said a guilty man would not have done that. Despite those claims, the jury found Arteaga guilty.

Arteaga was on trial for the murder of Schmidt, a 34 year old mother he dated for more than 6 years. While Arteaga dated Schmidt he was married to a different woman for more than 20 years. Police believe Arteaga killed Schmidt around the turn of the New Year in 2012.

On New Year’s Day Kim’s mom Toni found her daughter’s body after receiving a call from Arteaga, who was apparently concerned for Kim’s safety. She had not been heard from since 4:00 a.m that morning so Daniel called Toni to check on her. When Toni arrived at the house she found Kim in her bed, murdered, with a gunshot wound to the head.

While Toni entered the house she had Daniel Arteaga on the phone so she could talk to somebody while she made her way inside. Little did she know she was talking with the suspected killer. In August of 2012 police arrested Arteaga.

Arteaga's sentencing is scheduled for June 5th, 2014.
