Training Tip: Linking Behaviors

Posted: Updated:
MISSOULA -  The Humane Society of Western Montana's Jean Biggins, and Bella show you how to teach your dog to link behaviors. To do this Biggins does several tricks in a row, before giving Bella a treat.

"We're going to help you do this with puppy push up's, which is a sit up, sit down. They don't get the treat until they complete all three," Biggins said.

Biggins said if your dog isn't good at the sit down cue, you may need to lure them using treats.

"The down into sit is often the hardest part, so now I'm just pretending there's a treat in my hand. What this does, is it's useful, because it shows them they don't get a treat every time," Biggins said.

Biggins said by using a treat to lure your dog into a sit, and back up, and by not giving them a treat every time, you can successfully teach them how to link behaviors using puppy push ups.

Like all of the animals at the humane society, Bella is up for adoption. If you're interested in adopting, head to the Humane Society of Western Montana.
