McMINNVILLE, Ore – The Whitworth softball team was knocked out of the Northwest Conference Tournament after Pacific (Ore.) defeated the Pirates 4-3 at Del Smith Stadium on Saturday.

Whitworth broke up a scoreless game in the top of the third after back-to-back singles from sophomore Alyssa Hall and senior Taylor Gilbert put runners on the corners for senior Julia Johnson. Johnson hit an RBI single to center field, putting the Pirates up 1-0. Freshman Shannon Wessel followed with a single to left field, scoring Gilbert and giving the Pirates a two-run advantage.

After two no-hit innings from freshman Madi Perez, Pacific recorded a pair of hits and combined them with two Pirate errors for three runs in the bottom of the third, taking a 3-2 lead. The Boxers doubled their lead in the bottom of the fourth as Ashley Mitch scored after a Pacific fly-out.

Whitworth cut the lead to one run in the top of the fifth, as a Pacific error allowed Wessel to take first with two outs already in the books. Junior Peyton McMahon sent Wessel home with a double to center field.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, sophomore Brittany Connor and junior Riley Fritz got the Pirates out of inning with all runners left on base as Connor snagged a fly ball in right field and Fritz struck Ashley Mitch out swinging. Fritz kept the Boxers off the board in the sixth as well, limiting them to one hit and stranding a pair of runners.

The Pirates put a pair of runners on after Sara Aasness walked Gilbert and Wessel in the top of the ninth. With a runner on third and two outs, the Boxers secured their bid to advance to the championship series with a strikeout.

Peyton McMahon finished the game 2-4 at the plate with an RBI. Taylor Gilbert was 2-3 with a run scored.

Despite giving up just two hits and one earned run, Madi Perez (15-7) took the loss in the circle. Perez threw three innings with two strikeouts and two walks. Sara Aasness (14-5) earned the win, allowing eight hits and two earned runs with two walks and seven strikeouts in seven innings in the circle.

Whitworth falls to 27-16 overall, while Pacific improves to 27-11. With the win, the Boxers advance to the championship series with top-seeded Linfield.
