Zags Dominate Portland in Doubleheader

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga University baseball combined for 16 runs on 19 hits in Friday’s doubleheader sweep over the University of Portland at Patterson Baseball Complex.

The two wins give the Bulldogs (14-23, 10-7 WCC) the series over the Pilots (8-32, 2-15). Gonzaga has won 11 consecutive games over Portland.

The Zags took the opening game of the day 8-4 paced by the bats of Payden Cawley Lamb, Jimmy Sinatro and Cory LeBrun. Lamb went 4-for-5 with 3 RBI while Sinatro went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and Cory LeBrun added 2 RBI.

Brandon Bailey got his third win of the year after giving the Zags 5.2 strong innings. He allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits while striking out four.

The Pilots Kevin Wade led the Portland offense. He went 2-for-3 with 3 RBI including a 2 RBI single in the sixth.

The Bulldogs used six pitchers in the game. After Bailey was relieved by David Bigelow in the sixth, GU would bring in lefty Ben Brown, right-hander Sean-Luke Brija, Kenny Smith and Karl Myers.

Senior Myers earned the save, his third of the year, after entering the game with the tying run in scoring position in the top of the eighth.

In the nightcap, sophomore starter Taylor Jones led the way in an 8-2 victory.

Jones moved to 4-2 on the year after delivering 6.1 innings allowing just two runs. The right-handed pitcher scattered six hits and tied his career-high of eight strikeouts.

The Bulldogs offense struck in the second inning. With the help of three Portland errors, Gonzaga jumped to an 8-0 lead on five hits. Joey Harris (double), Caleb Wood (single) and Sam Brown (triple) each had 2 RBI in the inning.

Portland scored in the third inning on a Davis Tominaga single and in the seventh on Tominaga double down the right field line. Tominaga finished the game by going 3-for-5.

Bigelow made his second appearance of the day, his 12th of the year, by relieving Jones in the seventh. He pitched the final 2.2 innings allow four hits but no runs.

Gonzaga and Portland wrap up the series Saturday. First pitch between Andrew Sopko and Chad Kjemhus is set for 12 p.m.
