Small Business Development Conference Finishes in Butte

Posted: Updated:
BUTTE -

The fifth annual Montana Small Business Development Conference wraps up in Butte.

This year's conference was one of its biggest, hosting more than 300 people.

There was a trade show, a large panel discussion, and even small break-out discussions.

"Anytime you can bring multiple small business owners together to give them opportunity to network, to maybe build on some success stories, share some war stories, and figure out ways to do things just a little bit better, it's a great opportunity," said John Doran. "That's what this conference is all about today."

The goal of the conference is to help small business owners with networking, teach them how to grow their business, while also outlining some of the challenges they may face.

Tony Simonsen is the owner of Home Park Assisted Living in Sheridan.

This is the third small business conference he has attended.

"It seems like in business you always have to be thinking outside of the box," Simonsen said. "How can we offer something better, or different, or new? So that's why we come. We come to see what we can do with our business to make it better."

While the conference focused on a number of aspects, the keynote speaker focused on social media and how small businesses can grow through the Internet.

"A small business can start and have a global presence through the Internet and look like a large, established company, even though they might be very small and have just a handful of employees," said Patrick Schwerdtfeger. "Maybe they'll even be working out of a second bedroom just to get started. That's what I'm going to be talking about, what those leverage points are."

The conference came to an end, hoping to provide enough information for the small businesses to grow and to help Montana.
