Governor: $45 Million for Eastern Montana Growth

HELENA -

Areas growing in the eastern part of Montana due to the Bakken will get some help with their growth and infrastructure.

On Thursday, Governor Steve Bullock announced a $45 million aid package for those communities.

It's part of the governor's "Main Street Montana Plan."

The money will go out as grants to cities, towns, tribal governments and state bonded water and sewer districts.

"The Bakken development is bringing jobs and opportunity. But, it is also imposing challenges on local communities they couldn't even imagine a decade ago. Soaring prices, inadequate infrastructure, the massive influx of new residents, it's really vexing local governments like never before. Some of those challenges require solutions that can be handled at the local level, but many of them require help and resources from the state," says Governor Bullock.

The state will also cut the interest rates on bond money borrowed for construction projects.

Communities will also have access to expert technical assistance to help with land use planning, affordable housing and grant application processing.
