Whitefish Lake Lodge Asks To Expand Marina

Posted: Updated:
WHITEFISH -

Whitefish Lake Lodge asks for more places to park boats and more marina.

They're bringing their case to the planning board this Thursday, but people have already started giving their two cents.

The project has two parts. The first part is asking for a few more boat slips along Whitefish Lake, and because that would mean that they would have to expand the dock, part two is building out the marina several more feet into the lake. Some people around the lake are concerned that might bring more traffic out on the water.

"It's a quiet area except for that Lodge and I think some of the neighbors don't like it, but we also got dozens of letters from people who would like a boat slip that are in support of it," said David Taylor, the Whitefish planning director.

Since the Lodge bought up some of the land next door, they're allowed to have 9 more boat slips, but they're asking to double that.

They already have more than 80, evenly split between condo owners and part-time users.

Most of the extra 18 would go into the annual raffle.

Jarron Brikhous lives just feet away from the Lodge, and could use a boat slip himself, but he's already thinking about how many more people this could bring to the lake.

"I like going down there and fishing and stuff in the summer. A little more attention down there I imagine might make it a little bit harder," said Brikhous.

"I think most of the people that are concerned about it probably live in that bay, you know, and obviously with the Lodge being a commercial facility there's a lot of traffic that comes and goes from there anyway," said Taylor.

City officials have already brought up ways to keep it quiet around the bay. One example was putting out no wake buoys near the shore, but these kind of band-aid solutions may not be good enough.

"A lot of people come here from Canada and stuff out of town, come here to relax and get away from the people," explained Brikhous.

If the planning board gives the Lodge the green light, then city council will get the final say on May 5.

Coming up on the Fox Montana News @ Nine, we'll show you another controversial issue the planning board will tackle Thursday. This one they've turned down several times before.
