Montana Snowpack Above Average This Season

Posted: Updated:
BOZEMAN -

This year's snowpack is well above average, but experts said it is too early to tell how this will affect run off and fire season.

Natural Resource Conservation Service officials said most of the state's snowpack is sitting at about 133% of average.

They said some areas are seeing snowpack at 160% of average.

The last time the snowpack was this deep was 2011, when much of the state experienced widespread and damaging flooding.

But experts said that doesn't mean it will melt like it did then.

"It is really hard to compare exactly what the run off is going to be," said Brian Domonkos, NRCS Water Supply Specialist. "It is hard to say just because we had this snow pack back in 2011 doesn't mean we are going to necessarily have it in 2014."

Officials said in 2011, significant rain in April and May, melting the snowpack, contributed to flooding.
