FWP Commission Extends Elk Kill Permits In Paradise Valley

BOZEMAN -

The Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks commission put new rules in place to prevent the spread of brucellosis from elk to cattle in the Paradise Valley.

In February, cattle ranchers in the valley asked the FWP commission to extend elk kill permits and allow them to build larger fences.

They said this would keep elk from migrating onto their property. On Thursday, the commission voted to allow ranchers in the area to kill up to three elk.

The other part of the proposal allows FWP to pay for elk-proof fencing.

"It's a good opportunity for us as a department and land owners to figure out if this sort of surgical response to co-mingling and high risk areas is successful," said Dan Vermillion, FWP Commission Chairman.

The kill permits would only be distributed between May 1 and May 15, the highest co-mingling time between cattle and elk.

Both parts of the proposal must be approved by the FWP commissioners and the regional supervisor.
