Mother Of Girl Killed After Car Runs Through Daycare Center Speaks Out

Posted: Updated:
WINTER PARK, Fla. (AP) - A manhunt across Florida has ended with the surrender of an SUV driver wanted in a fatal crash at a day care that killed a 4-year-old whose mother pleaded for him to turn himself in.

Twenty-eight-year-old Robert Alex Corchado was charged Thursday with leaving the scene of a deadly accident almost precisely 24 hours after the KinderCare facility in Winter Park was torn open in the wreck.

Lily Quintus was sitting at a table waiting for her afternoon snack Wednesday when a convertible was sent careening through the building.

Police say Corchado was driving his Dodge Durango that hit the convertible to start the crash that also injured 14, mostly children.

Nicole Quintus, the mother of the 4-year-old girl killed, in an earlier appeal for the driver to surrender said families are "emotionally destroyed" by what happened.

A judge is keeping Corchado without bail at this point and says he will be held in jail until at least Monday when the judge will hear arguments on whether Corchado can be released on bail.

Bail was initially set for $100,000, but a prosecutor told the judge that Corchado is a flight risk and that he should be held without bond.

Police say 28-year-old Corchado crashed his Dodge Durango into a convertible, which in turn smashed into the KinderCare building on Wednesday. Authorities say Corchado fled the accident.

He surrendered to authorities Thursday and was charged with leaving the scene.
