YAKIMA VALLEY, WA - Several controlled burns in the past week have gotten out of control in the Yakima Valley, threatening homes and destroying acres of land.

Firefighters say that while the fire season officially starts next week, the time is now to think about fire safety. Officials say it's time for people to be more cautious. They do not recommend starting a controlled burn if the winds are stronger than five miles-per-hour.

"People start getting out, they start burning, the weather is nice," Fire District 5 Chief Brian Vogel said. "They think we're just coming out of winter so the grass is still kind of greener. The reality is that it isn't. If it's dry enough to ignite, it's dry enough to take off and get pretty substantial in size if you can't control it."

Fire fighters recommend having a garden hose or fire extinguisher ready before you start burning. And they say having at least 30 feet of defensible space around your home can protect you from an out of control grass fire.
