School Stabber Used Two "Ordinary Kitchen Knives"

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The district attorney says a 16-year-old charged with stabbing 21 other students and a security officer at his Pittsburgh-area high school used two "ordinary kitchen knives."

Westmoreland County District Attorney John Peck called the weapons "common items you'd find in a kitchen."

However, he stopped short of saying that the suspect, Alex Hribal, took them from his home.

Peck says he doubts anyone other than Hribal will be held criminally responsible for bringing the knives to Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville on Wednesday.

The prosecutor says the knives weren't designed to be weapons, and didn't need to be stored in any particular way under the law.

Hribal is being held without bail in a juvenile detention center, though he's charged as an adult with attempted homicide and aggravated assault.

16-Year-Old Boy Charged In H.S. Stabbing To Have Mental Evaluation:

MURRYSVILLE, Pa. (AP) - The attorney for a 16-year-old charged in a stabbing spree at his Pittsburgh-area high school says he wants to have a mental health expert evaluate the boy.

The attorney also says he's hoping to move the criminal charges against Alex Hribal to juvenile court. For now, Hribal is charged as an adult with attempted homicide, aggravated assault and a weapons charge in Wednesday's attack at Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville. Twenty-two people were injured.

In an interview Thursday with ABC's "Good Morning America," defense attorney Patrick Thomassey acknowledged that Hribal stabbed the victims and said he didn't know what motivated him. He said Hribal is remorseful but didn't appear to appreciate the gravity of his actions.

And he said Hribal's parents were "horrified" by the attack.

High School Stabbing Victim In 'Very Serious' Condition:

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Police and doctors at a Pittsburgh hospital say a student injured in a mass stabbing at a suburban high school had surgery again overnight and is in "very critical" condition.Authorities haven't released the student's name. He's been described by doctors at UPMC Presbyterian hospital as a 17-year-old from Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville.

Doctors say he suffered a stab wound from a large knife that pierced his liver and missed his heart and aorta by millimeters. One of his surgeons, Dr. Louis Alarcon, predicted Wednesday that the boy would need additional surgery. That took place at about 1 a.m. Thursday.

The student is one of at least five in critical condition after police say 16-year-old Alex Hribal stabbed 21 students and a school security guard on Wednesday morning.

UPDATE: MURRYSVILLE, Pa. (AP) - A school police officer has been treated and released from a hospital, after being injured while ending a stabbing attack at a high school near Pittsburgh.

Police say a 16-year-old boy who was armed with two knives began stabbing and slashing other teens at the school this morning, leaving as many as 19 students injured. Four of them suffered serious wounds, but hospital officials say all are expected to survive.

The suspect is in custody, and investigators are trying to determine a motive. They're looking into reports of a threatening phone call between the suspect and another student the night before.
