Atlanta Archbishop Set To Sell His 2.2 Million-Dollar Mansion

Posted: Updated:
SMYRNA, Ga.- After a closed-door meeting on Satuday, April 5, with church council members ... a decision from the archbishop of Atlanta:

He's going to vacate and sell the 2.2 million dollar mansion he moved into just three months ago.

Parishioners have been calling for archbishop Wilton Gregory to follow the model of austerity set by Pope Francis and sell off the 6,000-plus square foot residence.

Gregory apologized earlier in the week and said he was disappointed in himself.

The luxurious home -- in atlanta's most exclusive neighborhood -- was made possible by a gift from Joseph Mitchell, the nephew of the author of "Gone With the Wind."

When Joseph Mitchell died in 2011, he left his estate -- worth more than 15-million dollars -- to the church, asking that it be used for "general religious and charitable purposes."
