New Grant To Help Close Gender Wage Gap

Posted: Updated:
BOZEMAN -

Officials hope $100,000 in grants will help level the playing field for Montana women.

The Women's Foundation of Montana announced the $100,000 Women's Initiative Tuesday at the Equal Pay Summit at Montana State University.

It will be used to support programs that give girls the tools to be financially successful and improve their economic security.

Today Montana women make 67% of what men make for the same job according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Governor Steve Bullock created the Montana Equal Pay for Equal Work Task Force last year to close that gender wage gap.

"The need to make progress on eliminating wage disparities, it isn't something just left for women or sentimental doting daddies," said Bullock. "Half of our workforce is women. When women do better, all working families do better."

The equal pay task force is hoping to bring more women into the higher paying STEM related positions, like finance.

Montana's First Lady, Lisa Bullock, also holds a job in a STEM field.

She is an IT manager.

"My daughters when they fill out their first job application, realize the work that they do is as important as their male coworkers and also to have my son have that same realization too," the First Lady said.

There is some good news for women. Bozeman Mayor Jeff Krauss said there isn't as much of a wage gap in city governments across the state.

"We saw local government is doing well. Can we do better? Yes. But I think in local government, particularly in finance, I saw the finance profession even Steven," said Krauss.

He said being aware of the changes in society is key to closing the gender gap.

"Just being aware that traditionally male dominated professions are a thing in the past and how we bring people forward," said Krauss.
