Griz O-Line Looks to Reload

Posted: Updated:

"The Offensive line is kind of the back-bone and always has been of the University of Montana football teams," says Griz head coach Mick Delaney.

With three starters graduated off last years offensive line, and several injuries during spring ball, things have looked a little different in the early going.

"It's been good so far. Guys have been battling on the O-line, we've been pretty banged up, so guys have been having to step up and do a lot of reps each day, but they are doing the best they can and guys are getting better, which is all you can ask," says Griz junior lineman John Schmaing

Getting better day by day, but without Danny Kistler, William Poehls and Kjelby Oiland, the offensive line is one of the younger position groups for the Griz.

"I get really impatient and I can't do that, because it's not the same.  Those kids need encouragement and to be positive, and I have a tendency to look at the whole picture and say this is terrible, but it really isn't, so you've got to keep things in perspective and make sure you're getting some of the things out of the practice that you need to, even though they may not be exactly what you may want them to be right now, and they'll get there I'm sure of that," says Delaney.

"We lost some great players, but I honestly don't think there is much of a drop-off.  I think we'll step up and guys will be ready to go to replace those guys, and I think we have great potential to be a great O-line," adds Schmaing

One thing the line has going for them, is through the years they've all been able to be successful at several different positions, which has been key, especially with their current injuries.

"Trevor (Poole) was playing left guard all last year, and he's moving back to right tackle.  He used to play tackle all the time, he can play both sides, so he's been doing well over there, but it's really important to be able to play two spots, because you have to fill in where you need to fill in," says Schmaing.

SPOKANE, Wash. - One of the great parts about living in Spokane, is if you head out of town in any direction, you're going to run into some beautiful farm land. I grew up south of Spokane, near Plaza, and one of my favorite things to do was to sit on the porch at night and stare south towards Rosalia at all of the rolling hills of wheat, lentils, barley and peas.
