NACHES, WA - The tragic news of this giant landslide doesn't sit well with anyone. Especially with people who live near Naches and experienced something similar in 2009.

Teri Heath remembers the day she and her husband had to leave as a massive landslide buried a quarter mile stretch of State Route 410 near Naches.

"We chose to take our motor home and my little Celera and go over Bethel Ridge to get out," said Heath. "Really rough jeep trail for hunters, not for motor homes and little cars. And we stayed a couple days at the Suntides Mobile Park."

Their home stayed intact, but others weren't so lucky. Neighbors said several homes were condemned along State Route 410, including one that's still slanted on its side.

The Department of Transportation said they built a temporary detour using Nile Loop Road for the 1,500  people living in the affected area.

"They made it work for us," said Heath. "Everybody pulled together. County, everyone around here. No squabbling, just got it done for us."

Last September, the community was hit again by several mudslides that closed a two-mile stretch of State Route 410, even trapping a few people.

"It was right across the river, probably about a 100 yards away from my house was probably where it came down," said David Hyde.

"But still extremely scary?"

"Yeah it closed the roads down," said Hyde.

Fortunately in 2009 and 2013, no lives were lost in the mudslides, and the community patched up the damage.

"We were very blessed that we didn't have that much damage up here," said Heath. "Those people, just devastating."
