Butte's SWAT Team Trains for Real-Life Situations

Butte's best got in hours worth of training Thursday.

It started with a quick debrief, and it soon went into loading their guns.

"They'll try to go through as many scenarios as they can," said Undersheriff George Skuletich. "Whether it's an active shooter in a school, a hostage situation, a bank robbery, or anything like that they can simulate, they will."

This scenario involved a suspect and a hostage.

First, the SWAT team breaks their way inside.

Then they throw in the flash bang.

"The SWAT Team trains monthly and once a year they go to a six-day training," Skuletich said. "The six-day training they will do the simulation-type stuff like they're doing here. I think we'll do simulations now about four times a year, since we recently purchased some rifle and pistol simunitons."

In Thursday's training, two officers served as actors.

One was a hostage, while the other was the suspect.

"They got me about three times in the hand, two times in the arm, and once in the chest," said Officer Greg Blue.

Fictional bullets were used, known as "simunition".

"Hopefully we don't have real-life situations," Skuletich said. They're used, I would say three to four times a year. Whether it's for felony warrant services, or for hostage situations, or for suicidal subjects."

In the end, the suspect was taken down and the job is done.
