Yellowstone Grizzlies Could Be Delisted Next Year

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, Wyo. -

Grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem could be removed from the federal endangered species list as early as next year.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service told the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee today they are working to determine how threatened grizzly bears are without federal protection.

The group is meeting in Jackson, Wyo. over the next few days to discuss how wildlife officials should continue to manage the bears near Yellowstone.

The IGBC said the grizzly bear population in areas surrounding Yellowstone National Park has been steadily growing for a few years now.

Officials say, now it is time to look at recovering grizzlies in other parts of the country.

"At this point the biggest challenge is going to be getting folks to move onto other ecosystems because all the managers here are concerned bears here are delisted and need to be managed," said Gregg Losinski, Yellowstone Ecosystem Subcommittee of the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee spokesman.

Officials said the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is expected to release their decision on delisting the grizzly bear in the Yellowstone area as early as January.
