Could Spokane See A Massive Landslide?

SPOKANE, Wash. - According to Tom Frost, who works for the USGS, it is unlikely that Spokane would see a landslide like what the people near Oso, WA experienced in their backyards. There are a couple key differences to both the soil and climate in Spokane compared to the west side.

There has not been an active landslide in the Inland Northwest for thousands of years. The landslide in Oso is an active landslide. The last landslide on that hill was in 2006. Hills in Spokane have dealt with erosion, but the land has not slid down the cliff like it did on Saturday. Also, the climate is different in Seattle.

The west side of the state gets much more rain on average than the east side of the state, making our risk of landslides much less.

However, Frost said that even though the chance for a landslide in Eastern Washington is less, it is still possible.
