RICHLAND, WA - School can be a scary place for some kids as bullying continues to make headlines around the nation. But, locally, the school districts are working hard to keep students safe. Still, the number of kids reporting bullies might surprise you.

On Monday, students at Marcus Whitman Elementary School will sign a Respect Pledge and then will celebrate their good work with Boot Out Bullying week.

For the 2012-2013 school year, Richland schools reported 66 bullying suspensions, Pasco schools reported 103 while the Kennewick School District had 23 and the Yakima School District reported 207. None of those were from Marcus Whitman, probably thanks in part to their 2nd Steps and Steps to Respect Programs.

"If anybody has ever experienced bullying, it's a horrible feeling. It can result in kids not wanting to come to school. You can have increased levels of anxiety and so, of course, that's not what we want. We want kids to be here and to feel safe," said school counselor Jack Williams.

Next week aims to let students celebrate their success in keeping bullying at bay with a week of fun activities and dress-up days.

Williams said they are teaching students to solve problems on their own and it seems to be working.
