Hawthorne Elementary Chosen For National STEM Pilot Program

Posted: Updated:
MISSOULA -

A Missoula elementary school is one of just 44 nationwide chosen to pilot a program in STEM fields, that's science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The program was created by project lead the way, which traditionally provides STEM lessons to high school and middle schools.

Last year, it decided to develop the elementary school program. When Hawthorne Elementary School officials found out about it, the school applied to be apart of the project.

"One of things it really does is provide active learning, and our students are really learning key scientific concepts, applying them using technology, and math, and they're also building academic vocabulary to be successful," said Hawthorne Elementary Principal, Becky Sorenson.

Once changes are made to the STEM lessons based on feedback from the schools in the pilot program, the lessons will be available to all U.S. schools for the 2014-2015 school year.
