MISSOULA -

The University of Montana receives its largest scholarship pledge in history, after a 1953 alumnus commits $11 million dollars of his estate to scholarships for Montana students.

The gift aims to make education available to more Montana students through the support of scholarships. The pledge will create about half a million dollars for scholarships each year. The donation comes from UM alumnus, Tom Cotter, from Palo Alto, California. Cotter is retired after a successful career in the financial industry and wanted to give back to the university.

UM president, Royce Engstrom, said Cotter wants his donation to go to students in financial need

"This is very important to individuals who will be recipients of these scholarships. It will allow them to attend college, pay for college, and help people come to college who might not have otherwise been able to do that, and at the same time, it will of course, allow the University of Montana to recruit wonderful students from the state of Montana," Engstrom said.

The gift was made through the University of Montana Foundation. It's part of the UM's investing in student success initiative, which reaches out to people who want make a donation to the university.

If you'd like to make a donation to the university, contact the University of Montana Foundation.
