BLOG: The Name is Gon-ZA-guh! Oklahoma State Coach Butchers Zags' Name

Gonzaga made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament at the end of the 1994-95 season. Ever since then, despite all the tournament games, poll rankings and slots on national TV, there are some people who simply missed the memo about how to pronounce the school’s name. Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford is apparently one of those people.

Ford sat down in Thursday’s pregame news conferences – a time for media members to ask players and coaches about their upcoming game the next day – and in his opening statement revealed his Gonzaga ignorance. Ignorance about the team’s name, at least.

“I’m just excited to be in San Diego, going against a really, really good team that’s playing great basketball right now – Gonzaga,” said Ford.

But it was HOW he said Gonzaga that raised a few eyebrows in the SWX cubicles. Yes, he said “Gon-ZAUGH-guh.” Like “saw”. Not like “aggie”. He said it. And I wonder how many more times this week we’ll hear it.

Will they ever get it right? Perhaps it’s just time to let it go (cue the Disney music).
