Hyalite Canyon Road Closing

Posted: Updated:
BOZEMAN -

The upper portion of Hyalite Canyon Road is closing tonight.

The Bozeman Ranger District of the Gallatin National Forest is closing the road to motorized traffic at Hyalite Dam.

The road will remain open to the Blackmore Day Use site.  Skiers, snowshoers and other non-motorized users can still park at the Blackmore Day Use area and use the road beyond the gate.

The GNF said they are closing the road because of recent significant snow, the equipment the county road department uses isn't available and the Forest Service is out of budgeted money for plowing.

If the area gets more snow, officials said they will close the lower portion of the road as well.

Every year, Hyalite Road closes at the mouth of Hyalite Canyon during the spring break-up period April 1 to May 15.

Hyalite Canyon is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The Forest Service said the area gets more than 20,000 winter re creationists a month.
