Suspected Serial Killer Donna Perry Makes First Appearance In Decades-Old Killings

It was a court appearance 24 years in the making and it lasted less than four minutes, but for the families of the three women Donna Perry, 62, is charged with killing, those four minutes sure mean a lot.

Perry (formerly Douglas Perry before a 2000 sex change) was scheduled to appear in court Monday, but refused to come. If a suspect continues to refuse to appear, judges can issue a drag order – which is exactly what it sounds like. In that case, jail staff would literally drag a suspect to the room inside the jail where video appearances are made.

Most of Tuesday’s brief appearance on three counts of first-degree murder was spent focusing on Perry’s gender and her classification inside the jail.

“Ms. Perry is legally Donna Perry,” her lawyer told the court. “I would like an order to reflect this change so I don't go to jail and they say she's not here because she's under her prior name."

Generally speaking, whatever name a person is first booked into jail on stays with them, regardless of marriage, or, in this case sex change. However, the Spokane County Jail will now list Douglas Perry as Donna.

Perry is charged with killing Yolanda Sapp, Nickie Lowe and Kathleen Brisbois within a few months of each other in 1990. In each case the women were found partially naked and shot. It’s a case that went cold for years – until DNA pointed investigators to Perry in 2012.

Family members of the murder victims were also in court Tuesday, hoping for justice more than two decades after their killings.

Perry is expected back in court March 25th and is being held on a $1 million bond.
