Lower Rattlesnake Residents Looking For Homes After Avalanche

Posted: Updated:
MISSOULA -

People who live in part of the Lower Rattlesnake continue to deal with the aftermath of a deadly avalanche. While one of the victim's was finally released from the hospital this weekend, others whose homes were affected by the slide are still trying to find a place to live.

One family and another man are still looking for a place to live. They weren't willing to speak on camera, but the woman whose helping them find a home told me their lives have been drastically changed since the avalanche.

More than two weeks after an avalanche a home at the base of Mount Jumbo, there's almost no sign of the home that once stood here.

"The people whose house it was at were both friends of mine, so it was a big concern, just going up there, and trying to find them," said Lower Rattlesnake resident, Tarn Ream.

The couple who lived in the were both rescued hours after the avalanche hit. The woman, Michel Colville passed away a few days later, while her husband Fred Allendorf was released from the hospital over the weekend.

"The larger picture of what had happened, the aftermath, and how big it was just overwhelming, and I thought I should come up with some sort of organized effort to help the victims," Ream said.

The couple's home wasn't the only one damaged. Ream is now helping neighbors find a homes.

"There was an apartment complex that will probably need to be destroyed, and then there was three others that were impacted by the avalanche itself," Ream said.

While many in the area have found a place to live, some still need a home.

"You know sometimes in the aftermath we get so wrapped up in the immediate, but we don't realize how many lives have been affected really adversely," Ream said.

Justin Bendel lived in this home, just to the right of the Allendorfs. He had no rental insurance and his home, two boats, and three cars were destroyed.

"He needs a place to rent, he was severely affected by the avalanche," Ream said.

JJ Bessette, her two kids and several pets lived across the street from Allendorf's home. They are now looking for a short-term place to rent.

"It's very difficult for them, it's very difficult for them, very overwhelming," Ream said.

Bendel is asking anyone who knows of a place to live to call him at (406) 544-9392. Bessette is looking for a one bedroom apartment with a lease that's $650 at most for her family. She only needs a place until November or December. You can call her at (406) 880-1297.

Funds have been set up for all of the victims. For more information on the funds, visit the  Missoula Avalanche Victims Facebook.

August and September is mating season for the hobo and that means you may be seeing more funnel-like webs in and around your home. Males are on a mission to find a female which is why they are a lot more active at this time.
