No Criminal Charges For Neglected Cattle

Gallatin County Sheriff Brian Gootkin said he won't seek criminal charges against a rancher who neglected his cattle.

The sheriff's department seized the cattle February 26 after getting a complaint.

The Department of Livestock and a veterinarian looked over the cattle while they were being cared for at Headwaters Stockyards in Three Forks.

Gootkin said he decided not to file criminal charges after meeting with the rancher.

"Once I met with the owner and talked to everyone involved, there were some difficult circumstances with the family," said Gootkin.

Gootkin said the cattle were returned to the rancher Thursday.

He said the owner will pay the bill for having the cattle stored at Headwaters Stockyard for three weeks.
