City Planners Tours Through Uptown Butte

Posted: Updated:
BUTTE -

Butte-Silver Bow County has hired a city planner who is walking the streets of Uptown Butte to find possible areas of growth and sustainable design.

Jeff Speck has worked with dozens of mayors to work on their city planning challenges.

The city planner focuses on making cities more walkable.

While walking the streets, Speck assesses how safe, useful, comfortable, and interesting the city is.

After spending days in the mining city and talking with city officials, Speck will create his own report and suggestions for the county.

"Compared to most places I go, the historical urban fabric is largely intact," Speck said. "There aren't many of what we call, "missing teeth". There's no holes between buildings, or sore spots as you walk around. So my main focus, by default, has been looking at the safety of the streets."

Speck is also an award-winning book known as "Walkable City: How Downtown Can Save America".

He says he will stay for two days in Butte, before coming back in a couple of months to continue his study.
