Ravalli County Commissioners move forward with a lawsuit against embattled treasurer Valerie Stamey.
In a procedural vote held Monday, commissioners asked the county attorney to initiate a civil suit asking for $29,000 from Stamey.
Montana Code Annotated 7-6-2113 reads, "Effect of failure to make treasurer's report. If a county treasurer neglects or refuses to settle or report as required in 7-6-612, the county treasurer forfeits and shall pay to the county the sum of $500 for each neglect or refusal. The board of county commissioners shall institute suits for the recovery of the sum."
Commissioners say they have 58 documented cases of Stamey refusing to file reports, which leads to the $29,000 fine. The county attorney will now draft the paperwork needed to file suit against Stamey.
Stamey has said county commissioners are corrupt and framed her.
Meantime, separate investigations into Stamey and allegations she made against county commissioners continue.
