Crime Tracker: Think Before You Click: Beware of Social Media Scams

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. - Social media is rapidly becoming a primary way that scammers are trying to draw in victims. Scammers like social media for the same reason everyone else does; it's fast, it's easy and it reaches large audiences in very quick amount of time. The Better Business Bureau is warning of social media scams that appear to be posted by friends about deals from legitimate businesses. However, they aren’t real. The BBB says those posts come from friend’s accounts that have been hacked or have a virus. Some of the most recent online scams include vouchers to McDonalds, a free iPad and a $500 gift card to Costco.

The BBB warns users to think before they click. Director of Communications Chelsea Maguire says “We do click and scroll so quickly through social media these days that we often do something without thinking because it looks good, it looks interesting, and that's what scammers are hoping for”. Chelsea says the best idea is sending a direct message to the person who makes the post to find out if it’s real. Also, if you do make that first click, make sure to check out the URL address. This will help identify whether the source is legitimate.

NEW YORK - Verizon is raising the price of its unlimited plan while introducing a slightly cheaper, more limited version as wireless carriers battle each other for customers. All major carriers now offer unlimited plans after years of steering people toward paying extra for using more data. Verizon, like its rivals, will start charging more for higher-quality video while hoping to attract cost-conscious customers with a cheaper plan.
