Could State Title Football Games be Played at UM or MSU?

Posted: Updated:

The Missoula Sports Commission held a press conference Tuesday afternoon to talk about many things, including MHSA events and other tournaments the group has hosted in Missoula...but the one item that had most people curious, was about football.

"There's been a lot of talk, a lot of information going out about the potential University of Montana and Montana State University hosting an all-class Montana High School Association football championship. hat process is in the exploration stages right now," announced Adams Center Executive Director Brad Murphy.

While there is a long way to go, the hope is to have UM and MSU alternate hosting the all-class football championship (opposite wherever the Brawl of the Wild game is playing), but organizers say it's about more than just football.

"We have beautiful facilities that can be utilized, but there are so many other wonderful things in Missoula, that a lot of these smaller cities who come from across the state can take advantage of while they're here, like shopping, our art galleries, and our downtown," says Mary Holmes with Destination Missoula

While there are those who oppose a neutral site game, Murphy says  the response so far has been positive.

"What I hear is, 'why did it take so long?  Why haven't we been doing this for a long time?' that's what I'm hearing from the general public.  There is a lot of buzz about this right now, and a lot of excitement about it, so I think the community overall in the state of Montana is really looking for something like this," says Murphy.

And for sports fans, it doesn't get much better.

"You can see five games in two days. What a spectacular thing that is," says Murphy.

One concern that has been expressed by fans is the cost of travel, believing schools could lose money, which Adams says they hope to solve

"There are economics of scale there that we can reduce, but also we have the funding mechanism with the TBID that we can kick back a lot to the schools," The Destination Missoula Sports Commission is working with Montana State and the Montana High School Activities association, while try to put together a more formal bid for the state football championships," says Murphy.
