Trustees Put Land For Second High School On Ballot

Posted: Updated:
BOZEMAN -

Bozeman School Board of Trustees voted unanimously to add a proposed land purchase to potentially build a second high school in Bozeman on the May ballot.

Bozeman is growing and with that growth comes the need for more schools in the area.

"We anticipate in six years we will be at 2,400 students," said Rob Watson, Bozeman Schools Superintendent.

Currently, Bozeman High School, which is the only high school in the city, holds more than 1,900 students.

Superintendent Rob Watson said a new high school in Bozeman will be necessary to keep up with the growth of the city.

"We've got a lot of growth in that area. There's a lot of areas that have been plotted out by the city to build more houses," said Watson. "We currently own 40 acres surrounding Meadowlark Elementary and we're proposing purchasing the 40 acres north of that."

Drew Pogge lives to the west of the open land that the school district is looking to purchase.

"We're concerned that it would be a large structure like the current Bozeman High School and that really change the character of our neighborhood," Pogge said. "It would also be a traffic and safety issue."

He said right now his neighborhood is quiet and he would like it to stay that way.

"We don't have much traffic moving through here," Pogge said.

Watson said the district already has over $1M dollars available to purchase the land.

"The voters have to approve the location," said Watson. "They don't have to approve the money because we currently have the money to purchase the land."

Watson said in the coming years, the district will also need to think about how it will accommodate the increase of middle school students. That enrollment has increased by nearly 150 students since 2009.

The land purchase proposal will go on the May 6 school election ballot.
